Motor overtemperature

Vacon · NX All-in-One Application

What does 16 mean?

The motor's temperature has exceeded its safe operating limits, primarily due to an excessively heavy load on the motor. This fault can also occur if the drive's internal temperature model parameters are incorrectly configured for the specific motor. Continuous operation at high temperatures significantly degrades motor winding insulation and can lead to premature failure.

Common Causes

  • Motor winding temperature has exceeded its safe limit.
  • External temperature sensor on the motor has detected overheating.
  • Prolonged overload operation of the motor.
  • Insufficient cooling of the motor (e.g., blocked fan, low speed).
  • High ambient temperature around the motor.

Repair Steps & Checklist

Click steps to track your progress.

  1. 1

Reduce the mechanical load on the motor to decrease its current draw and allow its temperature to return to normal operating levels.

  2. 2

If there is no apparent physical motor overload, check the drive's motor temperature model parameters (e.g., Parameter 30.01 Motor Nominal Current, thermal time constant) — verify they accurately reflect the connected motor's nameplate data.

  3. 3

Verify the motor's integral cooling fan is clean and operational, and that its cooling fins are free from obstructions or debris.
