IGBT temperature

Vacon · NXS NXP

What does 41 mean?

The IGBT Inverter Bridge overtemperature protection has activated, detecting excessively high short-term overload current. This can be caused by heavy motor loading or an incorrectly sized motor. Persistent high temperatures can permanently damage the IGBTs, leading to catastrophic drive failure.

Common Causes

  • Sustained motor overload exceeding the drive's continuous current rating (e.g., motor current above 110% of rated for >60 seconds).
  • Short-term, high-peak current demands during acceleration or braking, exceeding the IGBT module's transient thermal limits.
  • Motor parameter settings (e.g., P3-01, P3-02) that do not accurately reflect the connected motor's characteristics.
  • Inadequate cooling of the drive's heatsink due to blocked air filters or ambient temperature exceeding specification (e.g., >50°C).
  • DC bus overvoltage condition causing higher switching losses in the IGBTs.

Repair Steps & Checklist

Click steps to track your progress.

  1. 1

Record the drive's output current and motor load percentage displayed on the control panel.

  2. 2

Reduce the mechanical load on the motor and verify if the fault clears.

  3. 3

Verify parameter P3-01 (Motor rated current) and P3-02 (Motor rated power) match the motor nameplate.

  4. 4

Check for proper drive cooling fan operation and ensure heatsink fins are free of dust or obstructions.

  5. 5

Monitor the drive's internal temperature via parameter P7-10 (Drive temperature).

  6. 6

If the load is appropriate, consider increasing acceleration/deceleration ramps (e.g., P2-01, P2-02) to reduce peak currents.
