Emergency stop

Vacon · NXS NXP

What does 63 mean?

An emergency stop command has been received by the drive from either a digital input or via the fieldbus, resulting in an immediate halt of operation. This is a critical safety function that stops the machinery in an emergency. The drive will not accept a new run command until the fault is reset and the emergency stop condition is completely cleared.

Common Causes

  • Emergency Stop pushbutton activated, opening the safety circuit and removing the 'Run Enable' signal.
  • External safety device (e.g., light curtain, safety gate switch) tripped, activating the E-stop circuit.
  • Fieldbus E-stop command (e.g., specific bit in control word) sent by PLC/controller due to an external system fault.
  • Wiring fault in the E-stop circuit causing an unintended open circuit condition at a safety input.
  • Drive internal safety monitoring system (e.g., STO) detected an issue and triggered an E-stop.

Repair Steps & Checklist

Click steps to track your progress.

  1. 1

Inspect all Emergency Stop pushbuttons and external safety devices (e.g., safety mats, light curtains) for activation.

  2. 2

Measure continuity across the E-stop circuit (e.g., via safety relay contacts) to identify the open point.

  3. 3

Monitor fieldbus control word from the PLC/controller to confirm E-stop command (e.g., bit 10 in control word 1) is not active.

  4. 4

Verify voltage at the drive's safety input terminals (e.g., terminals 37 and 38 for STO) for required 24VDC.

  5. 5

Reset any tripped safety relays or re-engage safety devices and confirm their status indicator lights (e.g., green LED).

  6. 6

    Check drive's event log for specific E-stop source (e.g., 'DI 18 - E-stop activated').
