System fault

Vacon · NXS NXP

What does 8 mean?

This is a general system fault, indicating either an internal operational malfunction or a defective component within the drive. If the fault persists after a reset, it points to a more fundamental hardware or software issue requiring expert diagnosis. The drive cannot operate normally while this fault is active.

Common Causes

  • Internal hardware malfunction on the control board or power board (e.g., faulty sensor, corrupted firmware).
  • Electromagnetic interference (EMI) disrupting the internal communication or sensitive control circuits of the drive.
  • Overheating of internal components not specifically monitored by the heatsink temperature sensor.
  • Parameter corruption or software error requiring a factory reset or firmware update.
  • Power supply transients or instability causing intermittent internal resets or errors.

Repair Steps & Checklist

Click steps to track your progress.

  1. 1

Perform a drive factory reset (e.g., set P1-10 to "1" or "Factory Reset") and re-enter essential motor and application parameters.

  2. 2

Ensure proper grounding and shielding of all control wiring and motor cables according to manufacturer guidelines to mitigate EMI.

  3. 3

Check ambient temperature around the drive and verify cooling fan operation to ensure adequate heat dissipation from internal components.

  4. 4

Verify the input power quality at the drive's terminals (L1, L2, L3) using a power quality analyzer to detect transients or voltage sags/swells.

  5. 5

Note the specific sub-code (if available, e.g., in parameter A8-01) for the system fault, as this often indicates a more precise internal issue.

  6. 6

Check for firmware updates available from the manufacturer and perform an update if applicable.
