EF3

External Fault (Terminal S3)

Yaskawa · GA500 Maintenance and Troubleshooting

What does EF3 mean?

An external fault signal was received via MFDI terminal S3, possibly due to a problem with the connected external device, faulty wiring, or a misconfiguration where parameter H1-03 is set for an external fault (range 20 to 2F) but the terminal is not actively utilized. This will cause the drive to trip and stop the motor, potentially disrupting the process.

Common Causes

  • External device connected to MFDI terminal S3 (e.g., safety gate interlock) is active, signaling a fault condition.
  • Broken or shorted wiring connecting the external device to MFDI terminal S3.
  • Parameter H1-03 is configured as an external fault input when S3 is meant for another purpose.
  • Electromagnetic interference (EMI) affecting the S3 input signal integrity.
  • Contact bounce in the mechanical switch connected to S3.

Repair Steps & Checklist

Click steps to track your progress.

  1. 1

    1. Measure the voltage potential between MFDI terminal S3 and the common terminal (e.g., SN, S+) to determine its state.

  2. 2

    2. Verify the status of the external device connected to S3 (e.g., safety switch, level sensor).

  3. 3

    3. Check parameter H1-03 to confirm it is correctly assigned for the intended S3 function.

  4. 4

    4. Disconnect the wire from MFDI terminal S3 and observe if the EF3 fault clears.

  5. 5

    5. Inspect the wiring from the external device to S3 for damage, loose connections, or proper shielding.

  6. 6

    6. Temporarily configure parameter H1-03 to a non-fault function to rule out internal drive issue with S3 input.
