EF4

External Fault (Terminal S4)

Yaskawa · GA500 Maintenance and Troubleshooting

What does EF4 mean?

An external fault signal was received via MFDI terminal S4, possibly due to a problem with the connected external device, faulty wiring, or a misconfiguration where parameter H1-04 is set for an external fault (range 20 to 2F) but the terminal is not actively utilized. This will cause the drive to trip and stop the motor, potentially disrupting the process.

Common Causes

  • External device connected to MFDI terminal S4 (e.g., motor thermal switch) is active, signaling a fault condition.
  • Poorly terminated or damaged wiring connecting the external device to MFDI terminal S4.
  • Parameter H1-04 is set to "External Fault" unintentionally.
  • Common mode noise on the control circuit inducing a fault signal on S4.
  • Faulty sensor providing the input to S4.

Repair Steps & Checklist

Click steps to track your progress.

  1. 1

    1. Measure the voltage potential between MFDI terminal S4 and the common terminal (e.g., SN, S+) to determine its state.

  2. 2

    2. Verify the status of the external device connected to S4 (e.g., motor thermostat, overcurrent relay).

  3. 3

    3. Check parameter H1-04 to confirm it is correctly assigned for the intended S4 function.

  4. 4

    4. Disconnect the wire from MFDI terminal S4 and observe if the EF4 fault clears.

  5. 5

    5. Inspect the wiring from the external device to S4 for damage, loose connections, or proper shielding.

  6. 6

    6. Temporarily configure parameter H1-04 to a non-fault function to rule out internal drive issue with S4 input.
