EF5

External Fault (Terminal S5)

Yaskawa · GA500 Maintenance and Troubleshooting

What does EF5 mean?

An external fault signal was received via MFDI terminal S5, possibly due to a problem with the connected external device, faulty wiring, or a misconfiguration where parameter H1-05 is set for an external fault (range 20 to 2F) but the terminal is not actively utilized. This will cause the drive to trip and stop the motor, potentially disrupting the process.

Common Causes

  • External device connected to MFDI terminal S5 (e.g., fan failure sensor) is active, signaling a fault condition.
  • Incorrect wiring (e.g., wrong polarity, short to power) between the external device and MFDI terminal S5.
  • Parameter H1-05 is inadvertently configured for an external fault input.
  • Ground loop issue affecting the signal integrity on the S5 input.
  • Degraded contact or output stage of the external device connected to S5.

Repair Steps & Checklist

Click steps to track your progress.

  1. 1

    1. Measure the voltage potential between MFDI terminal S5 and the common terminal (e.g., SN, S+) to determine its state.

  2. 2

    2. Verify the status of the external device connected to S5 (e.g., air flow sensor, safety light curtain).

  3. 3

    3. Check parameter H1-05 to confirm it is correctly assigned for the intended S5 function.

  4. 4

    4. Disconnect the wire from MFDI terminal S5 and observe if the EF5 fault clears.

  5. 5

    5. Inspect the wiring from the external device to S5 for damage, loose connections, or proper shielding.

  6. 6

    6. Temporarily configure parameter H1-05 to a non-fault function to rule out internal drive issue with S5 input.
