MECHATROLINK Watchdog Timer Error

Yaskawa · J1000

What does E5 mean?

The MECHATROLINK communication watchdog timer has timed out because the drive did not receive expected data from the PLC within the specified timeframe. This indicates a loss of communication or a significant delay in data exchange over the MECHATROLINK network, which can lead to a complete loss of control over the drive.

Common Causes

  • Physical disconnection or damage to the MECHATROLINK communication cable between the drive and the PLC (e.g., broken wire, loose connector).
  • Incorrect MECHATROLINK network configuration (e.g., station address, baud rate) in either the drive parameters (e.g., F8-01, F8-02) or the PLC setup.
  • PLC or master controller failure, halting data transmission to the MECHATROLINK slave drive.
  • Excessive network traffic or latency on the MECHATROLINK bus, causing data packets to arrive too late for the watchdog timer.
  • Hardware malfunction of the MECHATROLINK communication interface on either the drive or the PLC.

Repair Steps & Checklist

Click steps to track your progress.

  1. 1

Verify the physical integrity and secure connection of the MECHATROLINK communication cable at both the drive and the PLC.

  2. 2

Check the status LEDs on the drive's MECHATROLINK port and the PLC's communication module for specific error codes or communication activity indicators.

  3. 3

Confirm that the drive's MECHATROLINK station address (e.g., F8-01) is unique and correctly set according to the network topology.

  4. 4

Review the PLC program and MECHATROLINK configuration for the master device, ensuring it is actively scanning and sending data to the drive's assigned address.

  5. 5

Measure the network cable continuity and shield integrity using a cable tester to rule out damaged conductors or improper grounding.

  6. 6

Increase the MECHATROLINK watchdog timer setting (e.g., parameter F8-04) temporarily to a higher value (e.g., 500ms) to see if the fault is timing-related.
