Thermal overload of motor

SEW Eurodrive · [PDF] Operating Instructions

What does 84 mean?

The motor has exceeded its safe operating temperature or has stalled. This fault can be triggered by incorrect motor protection settings (DIP switches), insufficient cooling, high ambient temperatures, excessive motor load, or an incorrect drive-motor combination. The fault also trips if the standard MOVIMOT motor protection is deactivated via DIP switch S1/5 (standard version) or S3/1 (AS-i version) and an external TH winding thermostat wired to the terminals for direction of rotation trips. Sustained motor overtemperature significantly shortens motor lifespan.

Common Causes

  • DIP switch S3/1 (AS-i version) or S1/5 (Standard version) is set to 'ON', deactivating the standard MOVIMOT motor protection.
  • TH winding thermostat tripped due to excessive motor heat, with terminals for direction of rotation wired to 24 V via TH, and supply voltage is present.
  • Incorrect setting of DIP switch S3/2 (AS-i version) or S1/6 (Standard version) for specific MOVIMOT and motor power increment combinations.
  • High ambient temperature around the motor.
  • Inadequate motor cooling or heat build-up around the motor.
  • Excessive mechanical load on the motor.
  • Motor operating at too low a speed for sustained periods.
  • Mismatched drive and MOVIMOT frequency inverter combination, especially if the fault occurs shortly after the first enable.
  • Motor stalled.

Repair Steps & Checklist

Click steps to track your progress.

  1. 1

If the MOVIMOT inverter is installed close to the motor, set DIP switch S3/1 (AS-i version) or S1/5 (Standard version) to 'ON' to activate integrated motor protection.

  2. 2

For MOVIMOT with a lower power increment motor, check the setting of DIP switch S3/2 (AS-i version) or S1/6 (Standard version) for correct motor matching.

  3. 3

Reduce the mechanical load on the motor.

  4. 4

Increase the operating speed of the motor if applicable to improve cooling and reduce thermal stress.

  5. 5

Verify the combination of the drive and MOVIMOT frequency inverter using product documentation, especially if the fault is signaled shortly after the first enable.

  6. 6

If using external temperature monitoring (TH), check the wiring of terminals R and L to 24 V via the TH for continuity and correct connection.
