3501

Insulation error / Check generator

SMA · SUNNY TRIPOWER X Solar Inverter

What does 3501 mean?

The inverter has detected a ground fault within the PV array. This indicates that the electrical insulation between the PV system and ground is either defective or insufficient, posing a potential safety hazard.

Common Causes

  • Defective electrical insulation in PV modules or wiring.
  • Insufficient insulation from the PV system to ground.
  • Mechanical damage to PV cables or components leading to a short to ground.

Repair Steps & Checklist

Click steps to track your progress.

  1. 1

Disconnect the inverter from all voltage sources (see Section 9, page 67).

  2. 2

Install a suitable device for safe disconnection and short-circuiting of the PV modules.

  3. 3

Connect a measuring device for insulation resistance (with a DC input voltage range of 1000 V or higher).

  4. 4

Short-circuit the first PV string and set the test voltage as close as possible to the maximum system voltage of the PV modules (must not exceed it, refer to datasheet).

  5. 5

Measure the insulation resistance of the string. Repeat the measurement for all remaining strings in the same manner.

  6. 6

Reconnect only the PV strings to the inverter from which the ground fault has been eliminated, then recommission the inverter (see Section 7.3, page 55).
