Recoverable Module Fault / Firmware Update Issue / Connection Timeout
Allen-Bradley · Compact 5000 I/O Serial Module
What does Flashing red mean?
A flashing red module status indicator points to one of several conditions: a module firmware update in progress, a failed firmware update attempt, a recoverable fault, or a connection timeout to the module. This state implies an issue that may be resolved without module replacement, often through software intervention or power cycling. It requires investigation to determine the specific root cause.
Common Causes
- Module firmware update actively in progress (normal state during update)
- Module firmware update attempt failed due to an error (e.g., corrupted file, power loss)
- Module has experienced a recoverable internal fault that can often be cleared by reset
- Connection to the module has timed out, possibly due to a cable failure or continuous IOT instruction execution without sufficient delay (interval < 1 ms)
Repair Steps & Checklist
Click steps to track your progress.
- 1
Allow the firmware update process to complete if a module firmware update is currently in progress.
- 2
If a firmware update failed, reattempt the firmware update procedure using the Logix Designer application.
- 3
Use the Logix Designer application to determine the specific cause of the module fault by checking the Connection and Module Info categories in the Module Properties.
- 4
To clear a recoverable fault, cycle module power or click the 'Reset Module' button in the Logix Designer application (Module Properties dialog, Module Info category).
- 5
If a connection has timed out, use the Logix Designer application (Module Properties dialog, Connection category) to identify the cause (e.g., cable failure) and rectify it.
- 6
Ensure a minimum interval of at least 1 ms between IOT instruction executions in the Logix Designer application to prevent connection loss.
