4982

External temperature 2

ABB · ACS580

What does 4982 mean?

An external temperature sensor (sensor 2) has detected that the monitored equipment (e.g., motor bearing) has exceeded its programmed temperature limit. This fault protects external components from overheating and potential damage, which could lead to critical system failure.

Common Causes

  • Motor bearing temperature exceeding the threshold set in P30.15 (Temp 2 Warning Limit) due to lack of lubrication, wear, or excessive loading.
  • Faulty external temperature sensor (e.g., NTC thermistor, RTD) wired to drive input, providing erroneously high resistance or signal.
  • Incorrect parameter setting for P30.14 (Temp 2 Source) or P30.15 (Temp 2 Warning Limit) not matching the sensor type or application requirement.
  • Wiring fault (e.g., short circuit or high resistance) in the external temperature sensor cable connected to input terminals (e.g., AI2, AI3).
  • Mechanical issue in the monitored equipment (e.g., gearbox overheating) causing a genuine high temperature.

Repair Steps & Checklist

Click steps to track your progress.

  1. 1

    1. Measure the actual temperature of the monitored equipment (e.g., motor bearing using a thermal camera or contact probe).

  2. 2

    2. Verify the integrity of the external temperature sensor wiring to drive input terminals (e.g., terminals AI2 and AGND). Check for opens or shorts using a multimeter.

  3. 3

    3. Test the external temperature sensor by measuring its resistance. Compare the measured value to the sensor's datasheet values or expected cold resistance.

  4. 4

    4. Review drive parameters P30.14 (Temp 2 Source) and P30.15 (Temp 2 Warning Limit) to ensure they are correctly configured for the sensor type and application (e.g., PTC, PT1000).

  5. 5

    5. Inspect the mechanical components (e.g., bearings, gearbox) for signs of wear, lack of lubrication, or misalignment if confirmed overheating.
