I/O module AI overvoltage

ABB · ACS580

What does 7086 mean?

An overvoltage condition has been detected on an Analog Input (AI) of an I/O module. The AI automatically switches to voltage mode from mA mode as a protective measure. If the high signal level persists, it could damage the input circuit or lead to inaccurate process feedback.

Common Causes

  • Input signal connected to the Analog Input (e.g., AI1 or AI2 terminals) exceeds the maximum allowed voltage range (e.g., 10VDC or 30VDC).
  • Wiring error connecting a higher voltage source directly to the analog input terminal by mistake.
  • Malfunctioning external sensor or transducer outputting an over-range voltage signal.
  • Incorrect parameter setting for the analog input mode (e.g., Parameter P3-01 configured for 0-20mA but receiving a 0-10V signal).
  • Internal fault within the I/O module's analog input conditioning circuit.

Repair Steps & Checklist

Click steps to track your progress.

  1. 1

Immediately disconnect the signal source from the affected Analog Input terminal (e.g., AI1 or AI2) on the I/O module.

  2. 2

Measure the voltage of the signal source that was connected to the AI terminal using a multimeter to confirm it is within the module's specified input range.

  3. 3

Verify parameter settings for the analog input (e.g., P3-01 to P3-04) match the expected signal type (voltage or current) and range.

  4. 4

Inspect external wiring for shorts to higher voltage sources or incorrect connections to the I/O module terminals.

  5. 5

If the fault persists after disconnecting the signal source, replace the I/O module as its internal AI circuit may be damaged.
