A985

External warning 5

ABB · ACS580

What does A985 mean?

An external device configured as External Event 5 (parameters 31.09 and 31.10) has generated a warning. This indicates a potential issue with external equipment or sensors that should be investigated, though it may not cause an immediate drive trip. Addressing warnings proactively prevents escalation to faults.

Common Causes

  • Minor leakage detected by a liquid sensor in a pump system, sending a warning signal to the drive's digital input (P31.09, P31.10).
  • Proximity switch on a limit position showing intermittent detection due to mechanical misalignment or debris, generating an oscillating warning.
  • Overload relay on an auxiliary motor tripping momentarily, sending a transient warning signal to the drive.
  • Aging contacts in an external relay or switch, causing an unstable output signal that is interpreted as a warning by the drive.

Repair Steps & Checklist

Click steps to track your progress.

  1. 1

    1. Identify the external device or process monitoring sensor connected to the digital input specified by P31.09 (External Event 5 source).

  2. 2

    2. Measure the voltage level at the drive's digital input terminal corresponding to the external warning to confirm its state.

  3. 3

    3. Investigate the external equipment or process for the specific condition that would trigger External Event 5 (e.g., fluid levels, mechanical positions, auxiliary motor status).

  4. 4

    4. Confirm P31.09 (External Event 5 source) and P31.10 (External Event 5 action) are correctly configured for the intended external signal and warning response.

  5. 5

    5. Inspect and clean the contacts of any external relays or switches that generate the warning signal, ensuring solid electrical connections.
