Phase UV Short

Allen-Bradley · PowerFlex 750

What does 41 mean?

Excessive current has been detected between output terminals U and V, indicating a direct short circuit condition between motor phases U and V. This fault causes extremely high currents and will severely damage the drive's output transistors and the motor windings if not immediately resolved. Prompt investigation of wiring and motor integrity is crucial.

Common Causes

  • Motor winding insulation breakdown between phases U and V, often due to aging, overheating, or chemical exposure.
  • Motor cable insulation failure between conductors U and V, caused by mechanical abrasion, crushing, or vibration in cable trays or conduit.
  • Contamination (e.g., metallic dust, moisture, carbon tracking) bridging terminals U and V in the motor terminal box or drive output section.
  • Incorrect motor wiring or accidental shorting during connection, creating a direct electrical path between phases U and V at the motor connection block.
  • Internal failure of the drive's output IGBTs (Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistors) for phases U or V, leading to a direct short circuit within the power module.

Repair Steps & Checklist

Click steps to track your progress.

  1. 1

    1. Disconnect all motor power cables from drive output terminals U, V, W.

  2. 2

    2. Measure the resistance between motor terminals U and V with a digital ohmmeter (expected typical value for motor phase resistance: 0.5-20 Ohms).

  3. 3

    3. Perform an insulation resistance test (Megger) between motor conductors U and V at 500VDC for 60 seconds (expected reading: >1 MOhm).

  4. 4

    4. Visually inspect the motor terminal box for evidence of arcing, carbon tracking, loose connections, or conductive debris bridging phases U and V.

  5. 5

    5. Measure the resistance between the disconnected motor cable conductors U and V at the drive end with an ohmmeter to verify cable integrity.

  6. 6

    6. If motor and cable test good, measure resistance between drive output terminals U and V with an ohmmeter (drive powered off, DC bus discharged) to check for an internal drive short.
