Heat Sink overtemperature

Danfoss · VLT HVAC Drive High Power

What does 29 mean?

The heat sink temperature has exceeded its maximum allowable limit, indicating an internal overheating condition within the frequency converter. This poses a significant risk of damage to the drive's power components if not addressed. The exact trip and reset temperatures are specific to the drive's power size, and the fault will automatically reset once the temperature drops below a predefined safe level.

Common Causes

  • Insufficient airflow around the frequency converter due to blocked ventilation openings or inadequate cabinet cooling.
  • Internal cooling fan failure (e.g., seized bearings, not rotating) or operating at reduced speed.
  • Ambient temperature in the installation environment exceeding the frequency converter's maximum operating temperature (e.g., 40°C or 50°C).
  • Accumulation of dust and debris on the heat sink fins, reducing heat dissipation efficiency.
  • Overloading of the frequency converter beyond its continuous current rating (e.g., P1-20 Motor Rated Current set too high).
  • Faulty heat sink temperature sensor or its monitoring circuit.

Repair Steps & Checklist

Click steps to track your progress.

  1. 1

Power down the frequency converter and lockout/tagout. Inspect all ventilation openings for blockages (e.g., dust filters, debris).

  2. 2

Verify the ambient temperature inside the electrical enclosure does not exceed the drive's specified maximum operating temperature.

  3. 3

Clean the heat sink fins and internal cooling fans using compressed air to remove accumulated dust and debris.

  4. 4

Check for proper operation of all internal and external cooling fans, ensuring they rotate freely when powered.

  5. 5

Verify the motor load current (e.g., P5-03 Actual Motor Current) does not consistently exceed the frequency converter's nominal output current.

  6. 6

If filters are installed, verify the filter material is clean and allows adequate airflow.
