ALARM 38

Internal fault

Danfoss · VLT HVAC Drive High Power

What does ALARM 38 mean?

An internal fault has occurred within the frequency converter, indicated by a specific code number defined in Table 6.1. This signifies a malfunction in the drive's internal electronics or software, requiring further investigation to prevent potential damage.

Common Causes

  • Malfunction or component failure on the frequency converter's control board or power board.
  • Corrupted firmware or application software within the drive's CPU, requiring a re-flash or factory reset.
  • Over-temperature condition on an internal component (e.g., IGBT module, heatsink) triggering a protective shutdown.
  • Instability or failure of an internal DC power supply rail (e.g., 24VDC, 5VDC) providing power to internal electronics.
  • Electromagnetic interference (EMI) causing transient errors in internal communication or logic circuits.

Repair Steps & Checklist

Click steps to track your progress.

  1. 1

    1. Note the specific internal fault code (if available, e.g., from display or fault log) for precise diagnosis.

  2. 2

    2. Power cycle the frequency converter (main input power off for a minimum of 5 minutes) to reset internal states.

  3. 3

    3. Verify ambient operating temperature is within specification and ensure cooling fans are operational and not obstructed.

  4. 4

    4. Perform a factory reset (e.g., Parameter P14-22 Load defaults) and re-enter all parameters from a known good backup.

  5. 5

    5. Check for proper seating of all internal ribbon cables and plug-in modules on the control board.

  6. 6

    6. If persistent, replace the frequency converter's control board or the entire unit based on specific fault code guidance.
