Motor Over Temperature Shutdown

Indramat · dds 2.1 digital servo drive User Manual

What does S-0-0011 Bit 2 mean?

A Class 1 Diagnostic indicating a shutdown error because the motor has reached an excessively high temperature. The DDS 2.1 drive is notified via a thermal resistor in the motor windings. This shutdown typically follows a 'Motor Over Temperature Warning' (diagnostic '51') that persisted for more than 30 seconds. The drive immediately enters a shutdown mode according to parameter P-O-0007, Error Reaction. This condition is reset only after the cause is cleared and the command 'Reset Class 1 Diagnostics' is received via the service channel.

Common Causes

  • The motor is overloaded, operating in a high torque condition for too long, exceeding its allowable nominal torque rating.
  • Incorrect motor sizing for the application, leading to continuous overheating.
  • Mechanical binding or excessive friction in the driven load, causing the motor to draw excessive current.
  • A short circuit or ground fault in the motor's thermal connection or windings.
  • Inadequate cooling for the motor itself (e.g., blocked motor fan, high ambient temperature).

Repair Steps & Checklist

Click steps to track your progress.

  1. 1

Check motor and drive sizing against the actual application requirements for continuous and peak loads.

  2. 2

Inspect the mechanical system for any binding or excessive friction that could increase the motor's load.

  3. 3

Verify the integrity of the motor's thermal connection (e.g., PTC thermistor or KTY sensor) for short circuits or ground faults.

  4. 4

Monitor the motor current during operation and compare it against the motor's nominal current rating.

  5. 5

Ensure adequate ventilation and cooling for the motor itself, checking for blocked cooling fins or a faulty integral fan.
