E12

External Trip

Omron · MX2 Inverter

What does E12 mean?

This fault is triggered by an external safety or protection device connected to an intelligent input terminal configured as 'EXT' (option code 12). It signifies that an external condition requires the inverter to stop its output immediately, acting as a general-purpose interrupt to the drive's operation.

Common Causes

  • Activation of an external safety device (e.g., emergency stop button, safety light curtain, thermal overload relay).
  • Open circuit or wiring fault in the external trip input circuit to the inverter (e.g., loose wire at terminal S1).
  • Configuration error where a normally closed (NC) external trip input is wired as normally open (NO), or vice-versa.
  • Malfunction of the external device itself, sending a spurious trip signal.
  • Inverter input terminal (e.g., S1) configured as 'EXT' (Parameter P4-01 set to 12) is not receiving the expected signal.

Repair Steps & Checklist

Click steps to track your progress.

  1. 1

Identify the specific external device connected to the 'EXT' input terminal (e.g., S1) and verify its operational status (e.g., reset ESTOP).

  2. 2

Measure the voltage (e.g., 24VDC) at the 'EXT' input terminal (e.g., S1) relative to common (CM) to confirm the signal state.

  3. 3

Check wiring integrity from the external device to the inverter's input terminal (e.g., S1), looking for breaks or loose connections.

  4. 4

Review the parameter settings for the input terminal (e.g., P4-01 for S1) to ensure it is correctly configured as an external trip (e.g., option 12) and its logic (NO/NC) matches the external device.

  5. 5

Bypass the external device temporarily by shorting the input terminal (e.g., S1) to common (CM) to determine if the device itself is faulty.
