E80

Encoder Disconnection

Omron · MX2 Inverter

What does E80 mean?

This fault indicates that the encoder connected for feedback has been disconnected, has a wiring error, or is of an unsupported type (e.g., not line driver output). Without valid encoder feedback, the inverter cannot perform accurate speed or position control, leading to a shutdown to prevent erratic motor behavior.

Common Causes

  • Open circuit in encoder signal lines (A, B, Z, or complements) due to physical breakage or loose connection at terminals (e.g., X1-1, X1-2).
  • Faulty or damaged encoder cable insulation leading to short circuits or signal loss (e.g., exposed wires, crushed cable).
  • Incorrect encoder type selected in drive parameters (e.g., P2-01 set for incremental when an absolute encoder is connected).
  • Power supply to the encoder (e.g., 5VDC or 24VDC) is interrupted or below minimum operating voltage, often due to a blown fuse or power supply failure.
  • Miswiring of encoder signals to the drive's feedback input terminals (e.g., A/A- swapped, B/B- swapped, incorrect pinout).

Repair Steps & Checklist

Click steps to track your progress.

  1. 1

Power down the drive and motor. Visually inspect the encoder cable for physical damage along its entire length and at both connection points (encoder and drive X1 terminal block).

  2. 2

Using a multimeter, measure the continuity of each individual wire in the encoder cable from the encoder connector to the drive's X1 terminal block. Verify resistance is below 1 Ohm.

  3. 3

Verify the encoder supply voltage at the encoder side with a multimeter (e.g., 5VDC or 24VDC). Check for correct voltage according to encoder specifications.

  4. 4

Confirm the encoder wiring matches the drive's terminal diagram (e.g., A to X1-1, B to X1-3, Z to X1-5). Correct any misconnections.

  5. 5

Check drive parameter P2-01 (Encoder Type) to ensure it is set correctly for the installed encoder (e.g., "0" for incremental line driver). Adjust if necessary.

  6. 6

If using an incremental encoder, verify correct termination resistor settings if applicable, especially for long cable runs.
