Thermal overload of motor

SEW Eurodrive · MOVIMOT MM..D With AC Motor DRS

What does 84 mean?

The motor has exceeded its safe operating temperature, triggering thermal monitoring. This can be due to environmental factors, excessive load, incorrect drive configuration, or the activation of an external winding thermostat. This error is triggered when the standard MOVIMOT® motor protection via DIP switch S1/5 set to 'ON' is deactivated, and an external TH connected to terminals X6:1,2,3 has tripped.

Common Causes

  • DIP switch S1/5 not set to 'ON' when MOVIMOT® inverter is installed close to the motor, preventing appropriate internal protection activation
  • External TH (winding thermostat) connected to terminals X6:1,2,3 has tripped due to excessive motor heat, especially when DIP switch S1/5 is set to 'ON' (deactivating standard MOVIMOT® protection)
  • Incorrect setting of DIP switch S1/6 for combinations of MOVIMOT® and motor with a lower power rating
  • High ambient temperature around the motor
  • Heat build-up around the motor due to restricted airflow
  • Excessive load on the motor
  • Insufficient motor speed for the given load
  • Mismatched drive and MOVIMOT® frequency inverter combination signaled shortly after first enable
  • Temperature monitoring in the motor (TH winding thermostat) tripped when using MOVIMOT® with additional function 5

Repair Steps & Checklist

Click steps to track your progress.

  1. 1

Set DIP switch S1/5 to 'ON' if the MOVIMOT® inverter is installed close to the motor, to activate the appropriate protection mode

  2. 2

Check the connection of the external TH (winding thermostat) to terminals X6:1,2,3 and verify its status

  3. 3

Check the setting of DIP switch S1/6 for combinations of MOVIMOT® and motor with one lower power rating

  4. 4

Lower the ambient temperature around the motor

  5. 5

Prevent heat build-up around the motor by ensuring adequate ventilation

  6. 6

Reduce the load on the motor
