Output Short Circuit/Overcurrent
Allen-Bradley · Compact 5000 Digital I/O Modules
What does ShortCircuit mean?
This diagnostic indicates an output short circuit or overcurrent fault condition exists on an output point. For 5069-IB8S/IB8SK modules, this protection prevents damage to test outputs. When detected, the output faults and turns off, and the I/O Status Indicator flashes red.
Common Causes
- Output point wiring shorted to 24V DC
- Output point wiring shorted to another test output point
- Output point wiring shorted to ground
- Load device drawing excessive current beyond the module's rating
Repair Steps & Checklist
Click steps to track your progress.
- 1
Disconnect the load from the affected output terminal.
- 2
Use a multimeter to measure resistance between the output terminal and 24VDC, other output terminals, and protective earth ground — expect high resistance (open circuit).
- 3
Inspect all physical wiring connected to the affected output for signs of insulation breakdown, mechanical damage, or incorrect connections.
- 4
If wiring is clear, test the load device for internal shorts by measuring its resistance.
