F13.16

Permanent high level in data line – critical

SEW Eurodrive · MOVIDRIVE system

What does F13.16 mean?

Encoder 1's data signal line is permanently stuck at a high level, indicating a critical communication issue. This suggests a wiring problem (e.g., short to supply voltage) or a defective encoder, preventing reliable position feedback and risking uncontrolled drive behavior.

Common Causes

  • Direct short circuit between the encoder data line and the +24VDC supply voltage inside the cable or at connectors.
  • Internal short within the encoder unit, causing the data line driver to output a constant high level.
  • Damage to the drive's encoder interface circuit, resulting in incorrect data line biasing.
  • Severely damaged or pinched encoder cable causing permanent electrical connection to a high potential.
  • Faulty external pull-up resistor or termination if used, holding the data line high.

Repair Steps & Checklist

Click steps to track your progress.

  1. 1

Disconnect the encoder cable from both the drive and the encoder. Using a multimeter, check for continuity between the data line pin and the +24VDC supply pin on the cable itself.

  2. 2

Measure the voltage on the data line terminal (e.g., X10/Data+) on the drive's side with the encoder disconnected (should be floating or low).

  3. 3

Inspect the encoder connector pins for bent pins or debris causing an unintentional short circuit.

  4. 4

Swap the encoder with a known good one (if available) to isolate if the fault is with the encoder unit or the cable/drive.

  5. 5

Check the resistance between the data line and ground on the encoder side to ensure it's not permanently high.
