F20.9

Fan function – fault

SEW Eurodrive · MOVIDRIVE system

What does F20.9 mean?

The cooling fan is defective, indicating a critical failure in the device's thermal management system. Continuing operation with a defective fan will lead to rapid overheating of internal components, risking permanent damage to the drive.

Common Causes

  • Complete failure of the fan motor (e.g., open circuit winding, seized bearings, or internal short).
  • Interruption of the fan's internal speed feedback signal (e.g., tachometer or Hall effect sensor) indicating zero speed.
  • Break in the fan's supply voltage wiring or connector within the drive's internal harness.
  • Drive's internal fan control circuit failure, preventing fan activation or detection of fan operation.

Repair Steps & Checklist

Click steps to track your progress.

  1. 1

Disconnect main power. Verify the fan's physical integrity by attempting to manually rotate the blades (should spin freely without resistance).

  2. 2

Using a multimeter, measure the continuity of the fan motor windings (if accessible at the fan connector) and compare to manufacturer specifications.

  3. 3

Measure the supply voltage directly at the fan's connector (e.g., 24VDC or 48VDC) when the drive is commanded ON, if safe and accessible.

  4. 4

Inspect the fan's wiring harness for any cuts, crimps, or loose connections that would interrupt power or feedback.

  5. 5

If the fan is a modular component, replace the cooling fan unit with a new one according to the drive's spare parts list (e.g., Part No. XXXXX).
